EKG technicians specialize in conducting electrocardiograms (EKGs) to record the heart’s electrical activity. They prepare patients for testing, attach electrodes, operate monitoring equipment, and document readings for physicians. This vital data helps doctors diagnose conditions like heart attacks and arrhythmias.

Scope of practice:

Common tasks and duties include:

Patient Prep & Care: Explain procedures, calm nervous patients, and properly position them. They attach electrodes (sensors) to the patient's chest, arms, and legs to capture heart activityComforting patients that might be nervous about needles
Administering Tests: Run various types of EKGs. This includes resting EKGs, stress tests (monitoring the heart during physical exertion), and ambulatory/Holter monitoring (portable devices worn by patients for 24 hours or more)
Equipment Maintenance: Clean and calibrate machines, troubleshoot technical issues, and track inventory of supplies like electrodes and adhesive pads
