What Emergency Medical Technician Do:

Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) are the first responders on the scene of a medical emergency, car crash, or disaster. They assess a patient's condition, administer immediate life-saving care (like CPR, wound bandaging, and oxygen), and safely transport the patient to a hospital while continuously monitoring their vital signs.

Beyond emergency responses, EMTs also handle routine medical transports for patients who need to move between healthcare facilities, such as a nursing home and a hospital. After completing a call, they also manage the critical tasks of documenting patient care for hospital doctors, and cleaning and restocking their ambulances

While EMTs and paramedics work together on ambulances, they have distinct training levels and medical scopes:

EMTs (Basic Life Support): Focus on essential, non-invasive procedures. They can manage airways, administer CPR, stop bleeding, splint fractures, and give specific pre-approved medications like EpiPens for allergic reactions or Narcan for overdoses.Comforting patients that might be nervous about needles
Advanced EMTs: Complete additional training to perform slightly more invasive procedures, such as starting IVs and administering a broader range of medications.Drawing blood
Paramedics: The highest level of pre-hospital care. They receive the most extensive training and can perform advanced, invasive procedures like inserting breathing tubes, administering dozens of emergency medications, and interpreting electrocardiograms (EKGs).
